The Octavia 2.0 TDi PD vRS comes with a 170bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel and is capable of 48.7mpg combined consumption.It's not quite as nippy as the petrol model, managing 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds, or 8.6 if you opt for the estate model, though it can still head on to 140mph.
The diesel costs £845 more than the petrol - prices start at £18,370 for the hatch and £19,220 for the estate.
And that, we reckon, will be the oil-burner's biggest problem - a faster and cheaper petrol alternative.
