The weird W8 unit (which was basically two V4s driving a common crankshaft) has gone, but VW is back with another flagship hot Passat.

It's destined to be called the R36 and will crack 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds before topping out at a limited 155mph.
A DSG twin-clutch gearbox will be standard on both saloon and estate versions, as will four-wheel drive.
VW promises the R36 will be more distinct inside than the old W8, which is just as well because the new car is expected to cost close on £30,000 when it goes on sale in the UK sometime in 2007.
One thing the R36 is likely to have in common with the W8 is anvil-down-mineshaft depreciation.
